Artist meets Archive - Fiona Tan

May 5, 2019

The showcase ‘GAAF’ created by Fiona Tan will be on display at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne from 4 May to 11 August 2019.
From 4 May to 11 August 2019, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne presents the exhibition GAAF created by the Amsterdam-based photographer, video artist and film-maker Fiona Tan. Within the context of the project Artist Meets Archive, the artist explored the archive of Agfa’s advertising department – which encompasses an estimated 25,000 photographs and negatives spanning from the 1920s to the 1960s. Tan’s primary focus was on images captured with the legendary Agfacolor film.

The exhibition title, GAAF (an anagram of Agfa) means ‘flawless’ in Dutch. It refers to the colourful, ideal world depicted in these advertising images – which also perfectly reflect the euphoria of the post-war economic boom.
