Snapshots and Curiosities

May 6, 2019

The Forum for Photography in Cologne presents images by Christian Maillard – marking the first showcase of the French photographer’s work in Germany. The exhibition is open from 4 May to 6 July 2019.
Unembellished, simple and direct: In his analogue black and white photographs, Christian Maillard (b. 1944) shows reality exactly as he finds it. Extensive travels through Europe, the US, South America, Africa and the Far East have honed his eye for seemingly marginal details, drawing inspiration from great masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész or Lee Friedlander.

Maillard embraced photography in earnest following his first showcase in 1997. Up until then the artist, who holds a dual degree in law and economics from HEC Paris, had worked in publishing and, subsequently, public broadcasting. In collaboration with the Thomas Zander Gallery, the Forum for Photography now presents a selection of works spanning the years from 1996 to 2018.
