Joseph Rodriguez, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, has long been known for his intimate portrayals of sub-cultures both in America and around the world. In this series, the Leica photographer takes us into the homes and streets of New York’s Spanish Harlem district during the second half of the 1980s. Despite an apparent omnipresence of violence and crime, his images convey the family and community spirit that infuses this neighbourhood – showing its inhabitants playing cards, listening to music on boomboxes or joyously dancing in the street. Instead of focusing on their poverty, Rodriguez captures the inhabitants of Spanish Harlem in sensitive and dignified portraits.
