Photographs from inside a refugee camp, taken by its residents: 'Being Refugee' continues at the Michael Horbach Foundation in Cologne until 20 March 2016.
The project 'Being Refugee' was initiated by Hartmut Schneider following a public meeting on the subject of refugees in Bergisch Gladbach-Sand.
The idea was prompted by an impassioned statement of camp manager Ingeborg Schmidt from the German Red Cross, describing the lack of purposeful activities as a major problem in preliminary reception centres. Hartmut Schneider decided to make use of his photography skills and provide the centre's residents with the opportunity to document their situation.
The project was made possible by a donation from Cologne-based photographer, art sponsor and foundation benefactor Michael Horbach, along with an appeal for donations on Facebook which yielded 30 high-quality cameras, a printer and photography accessories.
Around 4500 photographs have been taken so far. 250 images were selected for the exhibition and organised by topic.
