High-carat Auction

November 25, 2014

On 28 and 29 November 2014, classic artworks from the 20th and 21st century can be acquired at Cologne's Lempertz Auction House.
Andreas Gursky's spectacular 1989 shot of the tourist ferry 'Maid of the Mist' at the base of the Niagara Falls will be one of the highlights of the auction's photography section. The chromogenic print (from an edition of 12) is to be offered as part of the Contemporary Art and Photography auction on 29 November.

This representative of the 'Becher' school of photography will be accompanied by further contemporary works, such as a boxed portfolio by Martin Parr encompassing 350 prints from his series 'Common Sense', Bettina Rheims’ sexually indifferent 'Valérie II' from the series 'Les Espionnes', and Araki’s portrait of his muse 'Kaori' – a large-format Cibachrome print from 2004.

Classic Photography will be auctioned the day before, on Friday 28 November at 15.00. With this season's particular focus on post-war photography, this part of the auction also offers a number of rarities and special highlights. Among them, the vintage print 'Skull' from Brassai's 'Graffiti' series, pre-1956; two South-Italian street scenes by Henri Cartier-Bresson; Bill Brandt's 'Nude, Campden Hill, London'; two atmospheric city-views from the series 'Parisian Forms' by Otto Steinert, as well as works by Steinert's 'fotoform' colleague Peter Keetman.
