The Pfalz Gallery in Kaiserslautern presents the exhibition 'Still Lifes' with works by Vera Mercer, open from 28 November 2015 to 3 April 2016.
In this exhibition, the Leica photographer (born 1936) addresses the still life genre in skilfully composed, large-format images of dead animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables along with classic still-life props such as glasses, bowls and dripping candles. The results are sensuous as well as disturbing impressions that are imbued with a baroque-style opulence.
In Love with the Image
Radiant colours and harshly realistic details are combined with a sumptuous material reality. Spacial inconsistencies challenge the logic of the composition, introducing surreal elements into the picture. The all-too-obvious aspects of the image transpire to be no more than ingenious constructs, designed to draw the viewer into the image – which can have an equally inviting and deterring effect.
