The showcase encompasses resonant and intimate portraits of compelling cultural figures such as Maya Angelou, Richard Avedon, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Didion, David Hockney, Miranda July, Rick Owens, Martin Scorsese, Patti Smith, Mickalene Thomas, Kara Walker and John Waters, amongst others. What all of the displayed works – created by three of the most important portraitists of our time – have in common, is their innate atmosphere of conversations being held just beyond the frame.
‘Face to Face’ was organised by the renowned writer and curator Helen Molesworth. The showcase is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by ICP and MACK, London, with essays by Molesworth as well as fellow writer and curator, Jarrett Earnest.
