The exhibition Portrait and Surrogates remains on display at the Gagosian Gallery in Hong Kong up until August 5, 2017. It is the first time that Taryn Simon is represented in Hong Kong with this show. The works by the US American artist are produced with a lot of love for detail and using a broad range of equipment. With this approach, the award-winning photographer is deliberately breaking away from a journalistic work style.
In the Portrait and Surrogates photo series, Simon (born 1975) focuses on the interplay between object and photographer. By being brought together in different cultural or political correlations and then photographed, banal, everyday items can be loaded with new meaning.
