As part of Le Festival Images Vevey (September 5 to 27, 2020), the Swiss Camera Museum presents the exhibition ‘Holding the Camera’ by Alberto Vieceli. During the period from 2015 to 2019, the Zurich-based graphic designer collected more than 700 images from vintage manuals, brochures and photography magazines, which were dedicated to one sole purpose: to teach photographers the best way to hold their camera.
Vieceli subsequently chose 350 of these illustrations, categorised them in accordance with various criteria, and compiled them into a book. The recently released volume provides an unusual investigation of the perfect way to hold a camera, and pays tribute to the bygone age of analogue photography and its publications. When turning the book into an exhibition, Vieceli opted for an even more playful approach – by replacing his previous methods of classification with more unexpected sequences and arrangements.
