Hito Steyerl (b. 1966 in Munich, lives and works in Berlin) is a master storyteller. Her narratives – shaped by visuals, sounds, essays, performance, and architectural environments – shift between reality and made-up worlds that appear all-too-real.
For her more recent work, Steyerl developed a completely immersive installation for each of her videos. The project ‘Factory of the Sun’, for instance, which debuted at the 2015 Venice Biennale, takes place in a sci-fi matrix dotted with beach chairs. Her video ‘Liquidity Inc.’ (2014) – which addresses global migration and financial inequality – is viewed from a blue, wave-like seating area.
With the exhibition ‘Hito Steyerl. I Will Survive’, the Stedelijk Museum presents works from every creative phase in Steyerl’s oeuvre – including early works from the museum’s own collection. The showcase marks the artist’s most comprehensive retrospective in the Netherlands to date.
