The rise of the fashion industry in the late 20th and early 21st century was accompanied by the development of another phenomenon: fashion photography.
Curated by Dmitry Yuryevich Ozerkov, Head of the State Hermitage's Department of Contemporary Art, the exhibition ‘Beauty and Style. The History of Fashion Photography from the Collection of the Still Art Foundation’ retraces the history of fashion photography from the 1950s onwards. Through selected works from the Collection of the Still Art Foundation, the showcase introduces audiences to some of the genre’s key visual approaches.
The Still Art Foundation, established by Elena Karisalova in 2018, holds the largest collection of Western fashion photography from the 20th and 21st century in Russia.
On display are numerous original prints by great masters such as Erwin Blumenfeld, Horst P. Horst, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, and Guy Bourdin, whose works have become definitive icons of fashion photography.
