Rineke Dijkstra in Hanover

Share:

The Sprengel Museum is happy to be presenting the exhibition Figures in Motion: ‘Rineke Dijkstra and the Sprengel Museum Hannover Collection’, from January 27 to May 6, 2018.

With Rineke Dijkstra (born 1959), the Stiftung Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony Foundation) is honouring one of the most outstanding photographers today. The rigour of the form and content of Dijkstra’s body of work, in the depths of her photographic exploration of the classic portrait, occupies a solitary position in the more recent history of photography.

For the exhibition at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, the artist has developed a new presentation format built on a dialogue between selected pieces from her own oeuvre, and pieces from the museum’s own collection. The confrontation between photographs from the early nineties and current works, and paintings by Max Beckmann and Alexej von Jawlensky, as well as numerous modern sculptures, opens up a whole new perspective on the Dutch artist’s specific imagery.

The Lower Saxony Foundation’s International Photography Prize SPECTRUM does honour to the style-setting strength of this body of work and the artistic consistency with which Dijkstra continues to explore her relationship with photographic portraits in her film work.
