The 24 winners of this year’s World Press Photo Award were selected by an independent jury from a pool of 64,823 entries, submitted by a total of 4,066 participants from 130 countries. Several of the selected photographers have previously been featured in LFI Magazine, the LFI Blog, or in the context of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
This year’s first-prize laureate is Amber Bracken, whose winning photograph - ‘Kamloops Residential School’ – commemorates the fates of Indigenous children who were removed from their families to be educated in so-called residential schools. Isolated from their communities and culture, many of them endured severe maltreatment and neglect. In 2021, the discovery of over 200 unmarked children’s graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia drew global attention to this dark chapter in Canada’s history.
