From September 25, 2020 to January 3, 2021, Haus der Photographie in Hamburg presents an exhibition of works by Magnum photographer Matt Black.

The American documentary photographer (b. 1970) frequently explores the connection between migration, poverty, agriculture and the environment in his native California and southern Mexico. For his project ‘American Geography’, Black travelled over 100,000 miles across 46 U.S. states – including California, Oregon, Louisiana, Tennessee and New York. On these cross-country journeys, he visited communities whose poverty rate was higher than 20 percent, with the aim of putting these forgotten towns ‘on the map’.

78 images from these road trips are now presented at the Haus der Photographie / Deichtorhallen Hamburg. The selection – which was curated by the Magnum photographer in collaboration with Ingo Taubhorn – has never been showcased before. ‘American Geography’ is on display from September 25, 2020 to January 3, 2021.
