Kunsthalle Talstrasse in Halle, Germany, presents the showcase ‘AugenBlicke’ by East-German photographer Günter Rössler. Open from December 4, 2020, to April 11, 2021.
The work of Günter Rössler (b. 1926 in Leipzig) spans across the genres of fashion, nude and reportage photography. From 1954 to 1990, he photographed predominantly for East-German fashion magazines such as Modische Maschen, Sibylle, and the monthly publication Das Magazin – consequently becoming one of the best-known photographers in the GDR. In 1984, Playboy featured a ten-page editorial titled ‘Mädchen aus der DDR’ (Girls of the GDR) with photographs by Günter Rössler. With one fell swoop, Rössler’s fame also extended to West Germany.
The showcase ‘AugenBlicke – Photographs and Documents’ now presents a comprehensive overview of the photographer’s oeuvre. In addition to 250 images, the exhibition also includes Fred R. Willitzkat’s 90-minute documentary ‘Die Genialität des Augenblicks’, which gives insight into Rössler’s personality as a sensitive artist.
