Déjà-vu in the World of Photography

November 8, 2015

The group exhibition 'Déjà-vu in der Fotokunst' is currently showing at the DZ Bank Art Foyer in Frankfurt-on-the-Main, continuing until 21 November 2015.
The DZ Bank Art Collection currently presents a group exhibition of around 50 works, created by 18 contemporary photography artists from 5 countries. Each exhibit references a famous historical work of art, either through its content or choice of subject.

The viewer experiences the images as familiar, reminiscent of something they have seen before. To achieve this effect, the photographers have utilised different methods. While some have recreated scenes in their entirety – particularly when emulating famous paintings – others have chosen specific visual elements and placed them in a different context. Equally, some of the artists have used composition, lighting or the subject itself to merely allude to the original image.

The participating photographers are Claudia Angelmaier, Johannes Brus, Victor Burgin, Jose Dávila, Elger Esser, Christiane Feser, Günther Förg, Beate Gütschow, Axel Hütte, Delia Keller, Annette Kelm, Gerd Kittel, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Timm Rautert, Evelyn Richter, Georges Rousse and Andres Serrano.
