The Hangar Photo Art Center in Brussels celebrates Karel Fonteyne’s 70th birthday with a major retrospective, comprising a selection of 200 photographs. Fonteyne’s career, which spans five decades to date, includes 15 years as a fashion photographer. With his rather experimental style, Fonteyne created groundbreaking images that went beyond classic fashion photography. In 1996, he turned his back on the genre in order to pursue his personal projects. His work is characterised by playful symbolisms, deconstructions of reality, and a penchant for showing the complex within the obvious.
In a parallel exhibition, the venue presents the showcase ‘Borderline’ featuring the latest project of Belgian artist Paul D'Haese (b. 1958). Captured on a long-distance hike along the northern French coast, the series focuses on the boundary line between land and ocean – exploring the interaction between man-made architecture and the endless expanse of the sea.
