The Construction of Longing

September 17, 2018

Amsterdam’s FOAM photography museum currently presents the exhibition Double Enclosure by Paul Mpagi Sepuya, continuing until 18 November 2018.
From 4 September to 18 November 2018, the FOAM in Amsterdam presents Paul Mpagi Sepuya’s showcase Double Enclosure. In his first European solo exhibition, the American photographer (b. 1982) enters into a dialogue with his own artistic personality, his subjects and his audience. Sepuya views the medium of photography as the construction of longing: the longing to perceive and to experience, to record and to retain. Through a combination of draped fabrics, careful framing and skilful layering using existing works, the photographer presents us with renditions of arms, thighs, torsos and hands, but rarely shows his subjects’ entire bodies. This challenges the viewer to consciously tease apart the construction of each image. With this visual strategy, Sepuya explores the productive and critical power of longing as a central element of his work.
