Algerian photographer Ferhat Bouda is the recipient of this year’s Ellen Auerbach Fellowship, awarded by the Berlin Academy of Arts.
The biennial 20,000-euro grant for international photographers is sponsored by the estate of German-American photographer Ellen Auerbach (1906–2004). This year’s recipient is Ferhat Bouda. Born 1976 in the Kabylia region of Algeria, he has been working as a freelance photographer based in Frankfurt am Main since 2005.
Bouda was nominated by photographer Tina Bara, as well as Academy members Barbara Klemm and Hubertus von Amelunxen. Their jury statement reads as follows: “How to categorise Bouda’s photography? Regardless of whether they are documentary, reportage or fine-art photographs – Bouda’s work about the Berbers is characterised by a moving, deeply human quest, a visual probing that poses questions about the nature of humanity with every exposure.”
The award ceremony takes place at the Berlin Academy of Arts on October 25, 2020. The laudatory speech will be held by Hubertus von Amelunxen, while Barbara Klemm will conduct an artist talk with the grant recipient.
