What is Love?

December 3, 2021

f³ – freiraum für fotografie in Berlin presents the exhibition ‘Love Around the World’ with works by Davor and Anđela Rostuhar. Open from December 4, 2021 to February 20, 2022.
What is love? The most exciting feeling in the world, or merely a construct? Is it an everlasting connection, a sense of emotional or even material security? Does it involve subservience, safety – perhaps disappointment?

Croatian photographer Davor Rostuhar proposed to the love of his life, Anđela, during an Antarctic expedition. Together, the couple decided to spend one year travelling the world and investigate the phenomenon of love. Their efforts culminated in 120 interviews, gathered in thirty countries across five continents. Davor and Anđela met people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, visited cities and rural provinces, encountered remote tribes in the Amazon and nomads in the desert, ventured into the mountains and to the Pacific Islands. The individuals they spoke with were aged between five and ninety, and their close connections took the form of many different constellations – yet all of them were asked the same question: What is love?

The showcase ‘Love Around the World’ – open at Berlin’s f³ – freiraum für fotografie from December 4, 2021 to February 20, 2022 – offers fascinating insights into the personal lives of people around the globe. The presentation also serves to challenge some of our preconceived notions of love, and broadens our understanding of life in other parts of the world.
