Life in the Dark

January 31, 2023

Hamburg’s Freelens Gallery presents the exhibition ‘Stars of Polar Night’ by Esther Horvath. Open from February 2 to March 31, 2023.
Ny-Ålesund is the northernmost settlement in the world: the research community on the island of Spitsbergen operates throughout the year – including the four-month period reigned by darkness.

In her exhibition ‘Stars of Polar Night’, Esther Horvath introduces the inhabitants of Ny-Ålesund and their scientific work, which is of utmost importance for our future on this planet. Her photographs offer a rare glimpse into everyday life at this remote outpost of humanity, where the explorers of our time brave the harshest conditions in their quest for new scientific discoveries – even in extreme snowstorms and temperatures of minus 30°C.

The documentary photographer (b. 1979 in Sopron, Hungary) is a Fellow at the International League of Conservation Photographers and a member of The Photo Society (TPS); she also works as a science photographer for the Alfred Wegener Institute / Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. Ever since her first Arctic expedition on behalf of Audubon Magazine in 2015, Horvath has dedicated herself to documenting the world of polar research, and the lives of those involved in this challenging task.

The exhibition opens at the Freelens Gallery in Hamburg on February 2, continuing until March 31, 2023.
