On 17 and 18 November 2017, the Folkwang Museum in Essen will be hosting a conference with the heading of ‘The Body of Photography’.

Exploring our modern-day attitude to original photographs may be the first step in understanding how their status has been affected by the changing nature of the photographic medium. This symposium investigates how photography is treated in museums, institutions, in art history and on the art market, as well as in the fields of production, preservation and restoration. In what ways are the limits of what constitutes an original image being redefined? What new challenges does this represent? And ultimately, how can the expectations of artists, art historians and art dealers be met?

In order to explore these points from a broad spectrum of perspectives, experts from a range of different backgrounds have been asked to speak about the concept of the original photograph. They will discuss its role in their respective professional fields, its changing definition, the associated challenges, and even whether its legitimacy should, in fact, be thrown into question.

Please pre-register your attendance by 15 November 2017:
