The third edition of the Elliott Erwitt Havana Club 7 Fellowship grant was awarded to Armenian-American photographer Diana Markosian. Each year, the grant gives an exceptional photographer the opportunity to go to Cuba with a fresh approach to documenting the island. Markosian’s resulting body of work, titled ‘Over the Rainbow’, will now be presented at this year’s Paris Photo (8 – 11 November at the Grand Palais, booth A23). The series revolves around feminine identity, coming of age and some of the rituals this entails – such as the traditional ‘quinceaňera’, a lavish 15th birthday celebration for which the birthday girl dresses up like a princess. With a playful approach, the artist skilfully blends portrait photography with videos and documentary images.
Diana Markosian studied at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Her work is exhibited all around the world, and has been featured in publications such as the National Geographic Magazine, The New Yorker and The New York Times. Markosian has been a Magnum nominee since 2016.
