Galerie Miranda in Paris starts its autumn programme with a double exhibition by American photographers Jo Ann Callis (b. 1940) and Jan Groover (1943–2012). Both were central protagonists of the New Color movement in 1970s America. The exhibition in Paris comprises a selection of vintage and contemporary prints, taken from Callis’ groundbreaking ‘Early Color’ series (1976) and Groover’s seminal ’Kitchen Still Lifes’ of 1979.
While neither of the two artists proclaimed to be a feminist, their work – created at the pinnacle of the American women’s liberation movement – was often based on explorations of domestic spaces. In the 1970s, Jo Ann Callis was juggling life with two young children, evening school, multiple moves and an impending divorce. Despite these challenges, she worked ceaselessly on her ‘Early Color’ series. Similarly, Jan Groover saw the extraordinary within the everyday: her famous ‘Kitchen Still Lifes’ illustrate that a sink piled high with cake tins, cutlery and indoor plants can be orchestrated into visual poetry.
