Louise Dahl-Wolfe: Icon of Fashion Photography

February 15, 2018

On 15 February 2018 at 19.00, the exhibition Louise Dahl-Wolfe: A Style of Her Own opens at the NRW-Forum in Dusseldorf. The showcase forms part of the debut edition of the Dusseldorf Photo Festival.
For the first edition of the new Dusseldorf Photo Festival, the city’s NRW-Forum presents a showcase dedicated to one of the early pioneers of fashion photography. Louise Dahl-Wolfe : A Style of her Own traces the artist’s ascent to becoming one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century — and highlights the extent to which Dahl-Wolfe contributed to defining the image of a modern, independent woman. Comprising over 100 photographs spanning from 1931 to 1959, the exhibition is on display from 16 February to 20 May 2018.
Louise Dahl-Wolfe is among the key figures in American photography of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, whose work significantly influenced fellow artists such as Horst P. Host, Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. This showcase of portraits, nudes, fashion and documentary photographs offers a comprehensive insight into the creative oeuvre of an extraordinary woman, who modernised the style of Hollywood portraits, and built a career in a previously male-dominated industry.
