Untold Stories

Peter Lindbergh’s exhibition ‘Untold Stories’, which is on display at the Kunstpalast in Dusseldorf until June 1, 2020, is the only showcase to have been curated by the late photographer himself.

Lindbergh’s selection of 140 images, spanning from the 1980s to 2019, offers nuanced insights into the artist’s extraordinary oeuvre along with the opportunity to discover previously unknown elements of his work. The majority of the presented images have never been showcased in an exhibition; others were originally published in the magazines for which they were created, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and the Wall Street Journal.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Lindbergh’s work is that the portrayed individual takes precedence over the showcased fashion. With this person-oriented approach, the artist forever redefined the nature of both fashion photography and mainstream culture. “Even fashion photographers have a certain responsibility, whether they accept it or not,” he once explained. In Lindbergh’s eyes, a true photographer was someone who “spends twenty, thirty years navigating life with a specific set of values that are reflected in his work. Otherwise you are just somebody who takes pictures.”

With ‘Untold Stories’ the world-famous photographer, who passed away in September 2019, has gifted audiences with a unique legacy that clearly illustrates his personal perspective on fashion photography.
The exhibition was organised by Dusseldorf’s Kunstpalast, in cooperation with the Peter Lindbergh Studio in Paris.
