Riverscapes

October 3, 2020

From October 3, 2020 to March 28, 2021, the Kunstarchiv Kaiserswerth in Dusseldorf presents the exhibition ‘Flusslandschaften’ (Riverscapes).
Dusseldorf’s Kunstarchiv Kaiserswerth museum presents the exhibition ‘Flusslandschaften’, open from October 3, 2020 to March 28, 2021. The presentation was organised by the city’s Cultural Department in collaboration with Studio Bernd & Hilla Becher and the Photography Collection / SK Cultural Foundation in Cologne.

The group exhibition comprises monochrome and colour works by key Dusseldorf artists Bernd & Hilla Becher, Laurenz Berges, Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte, Bernard Langerock, August Sander, and Josef Schulz. The selected images are centred around depictions of riverscapes – traditionally a popular theme in classic paintings. Modern-day river landscapes are often found within an urban or industrial context. Nevertheless, the displayed scenes are imbued with a majestic power that is, perhaps, borne out of the history inherent in landscape depictions of this kind.

In part, the exhibition was inspired by the role of Kaiserswerth as a creative location for the legendary artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher.
