Through to August 7, 2022, Berlin’s Gropius Bau presents a major survey of Dayanita Singh’s four-decade oeuvre.
For Dayanita Singh, the meaning of photography is something to be continuously redefined. Since the 1980s, the artist has approached photography in a manner that defies genres, pushes boundaries and expands our perception of the photographic medium.
Born 1961 in New Delhi, India, Singh studied Visual Communication at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, as well as Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at the International Center of Photography in New York.
The exhibition at Berlin’s Gropius Bau marks the first time Singh’s many forms of visual expression – developed throughout the past forty years – are brought together in one showcase. The selection includes some of the artist’s most important bodies of work, such as ‘I am as I am’ (1999) or ‘Let’s See’ (2021). In addition, Singh’s latest project, ’Painted Photos’ (2021–2022), will be presented to the public for the first time.
‘Dancing with my Camera’ illustrates how Singh moves beyond the established limits of photography – always guided by fluidity, music, choreography and form.
