From December 3, 2017, to February 11, 2018, the Brandenburg State Museum for Modern Art, Cottbus – Dieselkraftwerk, is presenting the exhibition, SIBYLLE. Photographs from a Fashion Magazine.
Sibylle was considered the ‘Vogue of the East’, and was an absolutely unique phenomenon in the former GDR. The producers of Sibylle came from the photography and design scenes, and, in addition to fashion, included articles about culture, art, architecture and health in the magazine. Photography, in particular, was a decisive element for the impact and significance of Sibylle in East Germany.
Over 200 images, taken over three decades by 13 photographers, are on display. They underline the development phase of GDR fashion photography, where the documentary style of the socially-committed photographers was visible, aiming to show reality from a perspective aimed towards the people.
Despite the limited publication possibilities, the fashion magazine managed to become a forum for artistically ambitious photography, where the photographers were able to develop and realise themselves freely, without falling prey to censorship.
