Master of portrait photography

Portrait photography is the focus of three solo exhibitions that will shown from September 7, 2018 to January 27, 2019, by the Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne. Among them is Masterpieces – Photographs from ‘People from the 20th Century’, with works by August Sander.

The portraits by August Sander (1876–1964), whose archives have been made available and presented within the context of a number of theme-based shows since the Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur acquired the estate, are considered masterpieces within the craft.

In the current exhibition, the Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur is presenting a selection of 153 original pictures from People from the 20th Century. The majority of the exhibits come from the institution’s own inventory, while there are other valuable pieces on loan from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich and the Berlinischen Galerie.
