In his photo collages, Gary Burnley combines representations of beauty, identity and social status with unlikely image fragments – constructing visual chance encounters that question Western attitudes and ideals. The American artist (b. 1950) holds a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA from Yale University.
With ‘Remnants of an Exodus’, Al J Thompson (b. 1980) created a visual homage to his second home: Spring Valley, NY – a Caribbean immigrant community, forty minutes from New York City. Since 1996, the Jamaican-born photographer has been a firsthand observer of the dramatic shifts – both demographic and political – in a neighbourhood that is fraught with uncertainty, but bound by love.
