Role playing with Cindy Sherman

May 14, 2018

From May 19, 2018, to February 24, 2019, the Weserburg in Bremen is presenting a solo exhibition of works by Cindy Sherman.
The Weserburg in Bremen is presenting a large, solo exhibition with over 60 images by the US photographer Cindy Sherman, taken from virtually all her phases of creativity. The exhibition will be on display from May 19, 2018 to February 24, 2019. It is the first time that such a volume of work by the renowned artist will be on display in northern Germany. The works carry a very special weight within the Olbricht Collection.
In the public view, Cindy Sherman is considered an important feminist artist. The works, that have been brought together by Thomas Olbricht, clearly show that her overall oeuvre is significantly more multi-faceted. The artist has certainly enriched the debate about “female identity”, with its behavioural patterns anchored in society and the corresponding expectations and clichés. This exhibition, however, also deals with existential themes, with dreams, fears, and sometimes disturbing and terrifying fantasies of violence and death, and consequently leads to a deeper understanding of this important artist’s body of work.
