Variations on an Orchestra

July 4, 2015

The Focke Museum in Bremen presents the exhibition 'IN TUNE' by Leica photographer Julia Baier – documenting the acclaimed 'Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen' Orchestra. The show is open from 5 July to 13 September 2015.
Since the year 2000, Julia Baier (born 1971) has been the orchestra photographer for the 'Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen'. For 15 years, she has travelled with the acclaimed ensemble and witnessed their performances at the world's most famous concert halls.

The Focke Museum in Bremen now presents the Leica photographer's first major solo exhibition with images of the orchestra, most of which have not yet been published.

The black and white pictures on display are no ordinary touring chronicle, nor do they resemble the classic, staged images of musical ensembles. Instead, Baier focuses on the musicians in the moments that surround their performances – capturing the tension before a concert, the relief after a performance or the relaxed exploration of foreign cities.

The resulting photographs are not only a tribute to the orchestra, but also to its global community of fans. Baier endeavours to distill music into a visual form, and make it resound in harmonious images.

The exhibition is accompanied by the book 'IN TUNE – Variations on an Orchestra', published by Peperoni Books.
