Under the title of ‘Clear Boundaries’, the Robert Klein Gallery presents a joint exhibition of works by two renowned photographers: in their separate projects, Rania Matar and Arne Svenson documented neighours, friends and strangers through the windows of their homes.
Rania Matar is a Leica photographer, whose portfolio ‘Ordinary Lives’ was featured in LFI 06/2011.
While standing at her kitchen sink this March during quarantine, the artist noticed a neighbour reclining in a window seat – which led her to contemplate the idea of “connecting across barriers”.
Arne Svenson’s work also follows the theme of looking through windows – often in the context of referencing images from art history. While the photographs from his two series – ‘The Neighbors’ (2012, winner of the Henri Nannen Prize 2016), and ‘Invisible’ (2019) – were taken prior to the Covid pandemic, they take on an entirely new relevance in the light of current global events.
