The Age of Man

May 13, 2019

Photographs by Edward Burtynsky are presented at the MAST Foundation in Bologna
as part of a groundbreaking multi-media exhibition, open from 15 May to 1 September 2019.
Anthropocene is a multi-disciplinary project created by Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky and award-winning film makers Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier. The immersive showcase of photographs, film installations and augmented reality highlights the impact of human life on our planet. Burtynsky (born 1955) is renowned for his large-scale photographs of industrial landscapes.

The project is rooted in scientific research arguing that the Holocene period has ended, and we have officially entered the Anthropocene: the Age of Man – a geological epoch in which humans are the primary cause of planetary change. Burtynsky, de Pencier and Baichwal investigate the indelible marks humankind has left on the geological face of our planet. Burtynsky has dedicated himself to this topic for the past 35 years in the hope of prompting audiences to reevaluate their impact on our natural environment.
