Foam Amsterdam currently presents the exhibition ‘The Beautiful and the Sinister’, featuring works by Bill Brandt (1904-1983) – one of the most critically acclaimed British photographers of the twentieth century. The showcase, which is on display until May 18, 2022, illustrates the close relationship between Brandt’s own visual language and the movements of the European avant-garde, particularly surrealism.
From his beginnings as an amateur photographer in the 1930s, to the portraits and nudes he captured later on in his career, Brandt always had a fascination for the strange and unusual. The exhibition is based on the premise that a certain eeriness is an ever-present element of the Leica photographer’s work, and shows how this attribute manifests itself in Brandt’s photojournalistic and fine-art images.
