From March 14 to April 18, 2020, the Thomas Schulte Gallery in Berlin presents Robert Mapplethorpe’s X, Y and Z series – marking the portfolios’ first unabridged display in Germany since 1997. Each of the three series, which were created between 1978 and 1981, consists of 13 photographs: portfolio X contains images from New York’s gay S&M scene, Y comprises floral still lifes, and Z encompasses male black nudes.
The showcase also includes an extensive selection of Mapplethorpe’s work compiled by avant-garde theatre director and designer Robert Wilson. In addition, there will be two screenings of the documentary film ‘Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures’ on the opening weekend and during Berlin Fetish Week.
Update: The opening scheduled for Friday evening will not take place. The exhibition is therefore open today from noon to 9 pm and afterwards at regular times.
