Berlin’s Capitis Studios present the exhibition ‘Esencia’ with photographs by Raul Cañibano, showing from 6 June to 10 August 2019.
On 5 June at 19.00, Berlin’s Capitis Studios are hosting the opening reception for Raul Cañibano’s exhibition ‘Esencia’. The artist will be in attendance; the showcase will be on display until 10 August 2019.
Born in Havana in 1961, Raul Cañibano originally trained as a welder. Inspired by the work of Cuban photographer Alfredo Sarabia (1951–1992), Cañibano became a self-taught photographer, and presented his first solo exhibition in Havana in 1993. Since then, his work has been showcased in venues around the world. In 1999, Cañibano was honoured with the ‘Primer Salón Nacional de Fotografia’, Cuba’s first national award for photography.
Capitis Studios are the first venue to present Cañibano’s work in Berlin. Curated by the artist himself, the exhibition features black and white photographs from various series spanning from 1992 to 2017. The primary focus is on portraits capturing the people – the ‘Esencia’ – of Cuba.
