Günter Rössler (1926–2012) is known as the ‘Eastern Bloc photographer’ who significantly shaped German photography in the second half of the 20th century. After completing his studies at the Leipzig Academy of Fine Arts, he started his freelance career as a fashion and reportage photographer.
His visual impressions of everyday life in the GDR and other Eastern Bloc countries were featured in numerous magazines. He was particularly renowned for his fashion work during the 1960s and 1970s, characterised by a remarkably authentic representation of his female subjects. Rössler’s images were frequently published in the celebrated fashion and culture magazine ‘Sibylle’, and are considered outstanding representations of German fashion photography to this day.
When Rössler passed away in 2012, he left an extraordinary legacy of unusual images that occupy a significant role in the history of German 20th century photography. This exhibition offers detailed insights into the photographer’s oeuvre by showing a selection of his most important works.
