Gerti Deutsch and Jeanne Mandello

September 28, 2016

The Verborgene Museum in Berlin presents photographs by Gerti Deutsch and Jeanne Mandello, starting from 29 September 2016.
As part of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) in Berlin, the Verborgene Museum presents the exhibition Destiny Emigration, open from 29 September 2016 to 5 February 2017. It traces the stories of two Jewish photographers, Gerti Deutsch and Jeanne Mandello, who left their respective home countries of Germany and Austria in the 1930s after Nazis had seized power.

Gerti Deutsch left Vienna for London in 1936, two years before Austria was annexed by Germany. Jeanne Mandello fled in 1934, leaving Frankfurt for Paris and subsequently emigrating to Montevideo, Uruguay.

The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Fotohof archive in Salzburg and the Mandello Estate, Barcelona/New York.
