Evelyn Hofer

January 2, 2018

The German-American photographer’s exhibition ‘Cities, Interiors, Still Lifes’ is showing at the Galerie Springer in Berlin until 2 February 2018.
Evelyn Hofer (1922–2009) was not only a distinguished photographer of architecture, interiors and landscapes, but was equally accomplished at capturing still lifes and portraits. The exhibition ‘Cities, Interiors, Still Lifes’ at the Galerie Springer in Berlin now presents a selection of the artist’s work, covering a wide spectrum of periods and genres.

Hofer’s oeuvre is forever linked to her collaborations with writers such as Mary McCarthy and V.S. Pritchett during the fifties and sixties, when she provided images for their books on Florence, London, Spain, as well as New York, Washington and Dublin.

Her work has also been featured in leading publications such as LIFE, the London Times Magazine and the New York Times Magazine. And yet she remains, in the words of U.S. art critic Hilton Kramer, “America’s most famous unknown photographer”.
