Seen By 3: Place an Image / Place in Image

November 22, 2014

From November 21, 2014, to February 22, 2015, the Kunstbibliotek at the Museum of Photography in Berlin is presenting a group exhibition curated by Övül Durmusoglu.
In our algorithmic, re-ordered, user-friendly universe, the past is experiencing a new beginning in the present, pictures are transformed into surfaces, leaving little room for the unexpected. Can pictures still develop an ambiguous, speculative language? Where can we find new, multi-faceted possibilities of articulation through images, if these even still exist?

In an famous television interview, Sannah Arendt said, “I have to understand why I continue writing.” Place an Image / Place in Image, the third group exhibition with the Seen By series – a collaboration between the Kunstbibliothek of the State Museums in Berlin and the University of Arts Berlin in the Museum of Photography – invites Musquiqui Chihying, Giorgi Gago Gagoshidze, Cornelia Herfurtner, Daniel Reuter, Dierk Saathoff, Kristof Trakal, Milos Trakilovic and Till Wittwer to discuss, through their different artistic approaches, what role places of development of artistic subjectivity play in the formation of images – embedded in an ambience of emotions, structures, reality and speculation that has resulted from a chain reaction.

Through the abstraction of the images as a place and gesture of critical thinking, the exhibition emphasizes the power of a topographic imagination, as a subjective instrument of research, and recurs in the process of the different works.
