The Masses

October 1, 2020

An exhibition of works by Krzysztof Miller at the Polish Institute in Berlin forms part of this year’s EMOP festival programme.
As part of the European Month Of Photography, the Polish Institute in Berlin presents the showcase ‘The Masses’ with works by Polish photojournalist Krzysztof Miller (1962–2016).

Curated by Joanna Kinowska, the exhibition is centred around crowd shots captured at large-scale events in the years from 1989 to 2011 – marches, demonstrations, concerts and sports events. The curator’s approach echoes the photographer’s own credo: Miller rarely focused on the people performing on stage, lectern or playing field, but was more interested in the reactions of the gathered audience.

“I focused on people and their emotions, their joys and fears. On what they are doing. I have documented the tragedy of the civilian population. This is why I think that, although my work is considered to be war photography, it is actually pacifist photography’, the late photojournalist once explained.

‘The Masses’ will be displayed in the gallery space of the Polish Institute Berlin until December 23, 2020.
