"Dahinter steckt immer ein kluger Kopf 1995-2001": Photographs from the acclaimed advertising campaign for Germany's FAZ newspaper are showing at the Villa Grisebach (Berlin) from 17 July to 29 August 2015.
'Dahinter steckt immer ein kluger Kopf' – 'There is always a bright mind behind it' – is the title of a long-running advertising campaign for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), one of Germany's leading daily newspapers. From 1995 to 2001, Alfred Seiland photographed numerous public figures with or behind the newspaper. Designed by Sebastian Turner, the advert series has been voted 'Campaign of the Century' by Spiegel magazine.

In co-operation with the Kicken Gallery, the Villa Grisebach in Berlin now presents a comprehensive selection of photographs showing the 'Brilliant Minds' featured in the campaign over the years. The exhibition is open from 17 July to 29 August 2015.

Staged with humour and intelligence
The humorous and cleverly-staged images depict each subject in an environment that alludes to their background in politics, economics, culture, science or sports. Seiland's photographs are included in numerous collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. The German History Museum in Berlin collects the series of images featured in the FAZ campaign.
Alfred Seiland is a professor for photography at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts.
