More than 30 of Annie Leibovitz’s most widely known portraits are currently displayed at the Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel in Berlin. It has been many years since a solo show of the American photographer’s portraits was last presented at a German venue. The exhibition continues until 27 April 2018.
Spanning the past four decades, the exhibition is akin to a visual ‘Who’s Who’ of the international show business, sports and music industry – with striking images of contemporary icons such as Scarlett Johansson, Nicole Kidman, Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, Muhammed Ali, as well as Miles Davis and Michael Jackson.
Leibovitz’s unique approach to portrait photography is undoubtedly among the secrets to her success. Before every portrait session, she dedicates herself to gaining an in-depth understanding of her subject – allowing her to emphasise the special characteristics of each person. Like no other, she has mastered the art of a perfectly orchestrated image: with at times elaborate and sometimes simple props, she always manages to convey the essence of a person within the most fitting choice of setting.
