The Romería del Rocío is not only one of the oldest Virgin pilgrimages in Europe, but also a unique folk festival. Every year around Whitsun, almost a million people from all over Spain congregate in the little village of El Rocío, south-west of Seville, to honour the Holy Virgin of the Dew. Hundreds of ‘brotherhoods’ from the surrounding villages and towns organise the processions.
The devotees travel on elaborately decorated carts, on horseback or on foot, in cars, caravans and busses. Bréard’s images, captured in stark black and white, document the sequence, the rituals, the beauty and the diversity of the human and religious moments on this pilgrim journey.
