From 9 July to 16 September 2016, the Hilaneh von Kories Gallery in Berlin presents the nostalgic and disconcerting work of visual artist Thomas Bak. His figures, objects, landscapes and interior spaces confront the viewer with mannerist, eccentric and enigmatically erotic visual worlds.

Bak counts among the classic representatives of fine-art photography which emphasises the surrealist interplay between authenticity and autonomy, in a style reminiscent of historical daguerreotypes. He describes his approach as "the resurrection of atavistic, seemingly lost pictures". The results are melancholic, poetic metaphors – 'alche-mystical' allegories from the perspective of our own time. The artist's iconography is charged with symbols, fetishes and references to art history, literature and Hermeticism.
