Liu Xia in Berlin

February 18, 2015

From February 21 to April 19, 2015, the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin is presenting photographs by the Chinese artist.
Born in Bejing, Liu Xia is one of China's most outstanding artists. She is a photographer and painter, poet and novelist. In the relatively liberal eighties, she was a member of Beijing's cultural scene, which was experimental and was opening up to the world. The photographic exhibition that will now be presented at the Martin Gropius Bau is made up of 50 items, many of which were produced in the nineties. Part of the exhibition will also be dedicated to her poetry.

Liu Xia only photographs in black and white. Her images are enigmatic. Even though she sees herself as a non-political citizen of China, her work is full of allusions to the repressive conditions the Chinese people are subject to. It is easy to detect influences from both the West and from China in her oeuvre. In the same way that the country is torn between the ideologemes of this new age, Liu Xia's work reflects this dichotomy with an unusual, rather enchanted clarity.
