Contemporary Photography from Turkey

August 10, 2017

From September 2017, two venues in Berlin – the F³-Freiraum für Fotografie gallery and the Heinrich-Böll Foundation – present exhibitions on contemporary Turkish photography.
On 5 September, the exhibition Türkiyeli opens at the F³-Freiraum für Fotografie gallery in Berlin. The reception will feature guest speakers such as Attila Durak (artistic director of FotoIstanbul) and Magnum photographer Emin Özmen. Less than two weeks later, the exhibition NarPhotos: Moments from Turkey opens at the city's Heinrich-Böll Foundation.

In the face of the conflicts in the Middle East and its own internal upheavals, Turkey has brought forth a generation of independent photographers, dedicated to observing the social developments within their country and documenting national catastrophes and events.

This generation of young men and women embodies a pivotal evolution in the history of Turkish photography, both aesthetically and thematically. Their work is characterised by multi-faceted forms of expression, and a great aptitude in developing their own conceptual imagery in addition to the visual and narrative strategies of photojournalism.

The exhibition Türkiyeli – Contemporary Photography from Turkey will be showing at the F³- Freiraum für Fotografie gallery from 6 September to 12 November 2017.

In parallel, the Heinrich-Böll Foundation presents the exhibition NarPhotos: Moments from Turkey, open from 19 September to 26 October 2017.
