Colour for the Republic

February 23, 2014

From March 31 to August 31, 2014, the Deutsche Historische Museum in Berlin is presenting an exhibition of official journalistic pictures from the former East Germany
The Farbe für die Republik - Auftragsfotografie vom Leben in der DDR (Colour for the Republic – commissioned photography from life in GDR) exhibition that is being shown at the Deutsches Historisches Museum from March 31 to August 31, 2014, is dedicated exclusively to official journalistic pictures from East Germany.

The foundations of the presentation are built on the archives of photo reporters Martin Schmidt (1925) and Kurt Schwarzer (1927-2012). Schmidt and Schwarzer worked as free-lance photographers for a number of different papers. Mass organizations such as the Free German Federation of Trade Unions, and companies were also among their clients.

The promise of colour photography
Colour photography played an important role in conveying socialist ideology. It became a form of expressing modernity as well as giving visual promise to a socialist future. The exhibition offers a glimpse of and reflects critically on the origins and the impact of commissioned photography.
